Red Flower Indigo Ikat from Japan, Vintage Kimono Fabric 6" x 57" Piece #115
Sleek and smooth, this ikat is dark - the red, green and white are darkened by all of the navy, dark violet and indigo threads in the weave. The red is a bit brighter and there is more contrast overall, in most lights, than than the photos. The grids and design are straight with the grain. This silk is bouncy, thin, light, smooth and crisp. We hand washed and machine dried a piece and it didn't fade or wrinkle, and kept most of its crispness. It didn't get supple or drapey. A true ikat, the back is just the same. These pieces had a former life as parts of a kimono, probably decades ago. In beautiful condition; it's been carefully stored. Japan. Note the last two photos which show this width. Most of the other photos are the full original 14" width but these 6"-wide pieces were cut lengthwise for the kimono.
