Traditional Solid Indigo Artisan Mie Momen Cotton from Japan 15" Wide, Matsusaka By the YARD # NS-45
Many fabrics from Japan are born from the weather, natural resources, history, people, and economy of specific areas, and this one is a good example. It's from Mie Prefecture and is a true indigo Matsusaka Cotton. Over the centuries these cottons have been well known in Matsusaka and elsewhere in Japan. They are a Designated Important Craft of Mie area. Here is some more information about the Matsusaka Cotton Hand Weaving Center:

These cottons are often striped but this one is basically solid, with streaks of darker and lighter tones where the pre-dyed cotton threads reacted to the indigo differently. It's a completely different fabric than yukata cotton which is machine made, smoother, thinner and more sleek. Partly because of the indigo, but also the type of yarn and weaving, this cotton is very earthy feeling, soft and luscious, almost but not quite slubby, with a bit of texture, supple, no sheen at all; very organic feeling. Both sides are just the same. Honestly, it looks and feels similar to many of the old handwoven silk Tsumugi kimono fabrics we sell; soft, a bit rustic, like homespun or raw silk. 15" wide, 100% Cotton, true indigo per the tradition, hand woven on a small loom, from Matsusaka Japan in Mie Prefecture. Sold by the full yard. 15" wide. Your piece will be in one piece from the bolt.
Newly woven, not vintage. Wash by itself; color may run especially at first. Cool water, hang to dry. Or test a piece in the machine(s) to check shrinkage and other changes.
