Maroon/Tan Rustic Silk/Hemp Vintage Batik Crepe from Japan, Perhaps Antique, By the Yard #753

This vintage kimono fabric looks and feels like a lightweight, supple, more rustic version of bark cloth; natural, slubby and textured. Batik (or what looks like batik but may have been stencil printed?) designs are light brown. The maroon/wine color is the same on both sides, and we're told it was probably dyed with mud or akane root. Both sides are similar and usable; one side has plumper lines in the design.  This crepe is thin, light, dry and supple.  It's almost drapey, with lots of slubs, occasional crosswise thicker threads creating texture. It seems handwoven and old.  It's not soft or silky or lustrous; it has an antique, slightly coarse feel. Our supplier in Japan translated the old tag (now gone) as about 50/50 Silk and Hemp or Ramie. There are small 1/2" snips into the selvedge in two spots we saw and will avoid them if we can, when we cut your piece. We'll be in touch if that's not possible.  Otherwise excellent condition.

Unique and gorgeous - these old exceptional kimono fabrics from Japan are more and more rare.   13.5" wide and sold by the full yard - we'll cut yours in one piece from the never-used bolt.
