Black/Midnight Blue Hemp? Stiff Papery Textured Crinkled Vintage Crepe from Japan, by the Yard, #331
Black weft and blue warp, creating a visual of quite dark midnight blue. Small crinkles from the twisted threads, it's probably technically a crepe weave, we think pure hemp. It's thin, with a hard not fluffy surface, and lightweight; less than 2 ounces per 14" wide yard. VERY stiff, papery and bouncy. Both sides are just the same. It's slightly see-through; the weave has a bit of openness. We machine washed and dried a piece and it shrunk, crinkled more and closed up from 14" to 13" in width, and even more in the length. It softened to maybe 50% its unwashed stiffness. We're not sure of its purpose in Japan but if you know, please share. We come across these now and then and they are so interesting. Be sure to pre-treat and be aware of the body and stiffness. We have had other vintage kimono fabrics from Japan like this that were labeled as pure hemp, and we think this one is too.
