Midnight Blue/Black/Indigo Vintage Kimono Silk Oshima Tsumugi? from Japan By the Yard #125

This silk looks and feels just like a certified Oshima Tsumugi Silk. But the label is one we've never seen before, and was a bit hard to translate. It does say "the technique I use is rustic hand loom unique to the area." Perhaps the area is Oshima Island, but this is done by just one artisan, who just sold locally so there was no need to state the area. We're not sure, but this silk is every bit as beautifully woven, lustrous, and high quality as the labeled, certified Oshima bolts we've seen and sold so many of over the years. Woven with true black, midnight blue, gray and a tiny spot of red in the center of each 'flower'.  Sleek, soft and smooth, thin, lightweight, sleek, a bit crisp, not truly shiny, with no drape and a little body, it's lustrous and exceptional as Oshima Tsumugi silks nearly always are.  Both sides are just the same. Probably dyed with mud, indigo and/or other plants; the island of Oshima is well known for this. 14" wide and sold by the full yard, we'll cut yours in one piece from the unused, vintage, excellent condition bolt.  100% Silk. Japan.
