Large Leaves Ikat Tsumugi, Smooth Crisp Vintage Kimono Silk Pongee from Japan by the Yard # 277

The leaves could be maple or hemp, both important in Japan; they are large and multi-toned, all done in the complex, intricate ikat. The background is warm ivory, adding even more subtle warmth to the extensive use of red in the leaves. In addition to lots of red, the weaver also used dark greens, black, and a couple of brown shades. The result is soft, not bright - it's calm, because of all the ivory in the ikat.  This Tsumugi is sleek, not shiny but very smooth, a bit crisp, lightweight and thin. It's not the raw-silk type of Tsumugi - much more refined and smooth, much like an Oshima Tsumugi. The label does say Pongee Handwoven, but not Oshima.  It's the same on both sides, has a bit of body, and no drape. It doesn't seem old to us but we don't know for sure. 14" wide and sold by the full yard; we'll cut yours in one piece from the never-used, excellent condition bolt.  100% Silk Tsumugi. Japan.
