Black weft and blue warp, creating a visual of quite dark midnight blue. Small crinkles from the twisted threads, it's probably technically a crepe weave, most likely wool, hemp and/or ramie, and no synthetic. It's thin, with a hard not fluffy surface, and lightweight; less than 2 ounces per 14" wide yard. VERY stiff, papery and bouncy. Both sides are just the same.  It's slightly see-through; the weave has a bit of openness.  We machine washed and dried a piece and it shrunk, crinkled more and closed up from 14" to 13" in width, and even more in the length. It softened to maybe 50% its unwashed stiffness, making us wonder if it's been starched. We're not sure of its purpose in Japan but if you know, please share. It's possible that it's very warm for its weight so perhaps used for winter clothing??  We come across these now and then and they are so interesting. Be sure to pre-treat and be aware of the body and stiffness. It's a bit of a mystery.

14" wide. Sold by the full yard and we'll cut yours from the never used, perfect condition vintage bolt in one piece.
