Waterfalls Vintage Aubergine Kimono Silk Panel 13.5" x 95" #26622
Deep purple silk jacquard kimono silk with subtle woven symbols; stars, bamboo leaves, stripes, clouds. The designs add glisten depending on the light. The aubergine color is gorgeous, saturated and even. The hand-painted waterfalls, waves and flowers designs are bright and large; from 9" to the largest which is 24"long (the large aqua waterfall design) and over most of the 13.5" width of the silk. The green, red, blues, gold and white are all hand-painted, including thin gold outlines, and those areas a slightly stiffer than the base silk but not much. The silk is very supple, has medium drape and a bit of satin gleam from the jacquard. It's probably 80-90 years old and in excellent condition for its age; the selvedges aren't perfectly straight as the photos show. Kimono silk in near perfect condition. In Japan, waterfalls and bamboo signify strength, resilience and flexibility, health, life, ebb and flow.
The large waterfalls/waves/flowers designs appear in 5 areas on this piece, without much plain silk in between them. The piece is 13.5" wide and 95" long. There is one large aqua waterfall on this piece.
