Supple Lightweight Ikat, Black/Mud/Blue/Rust Kimono Silk Tsumugi from Japan By the Yard #150
The colors are in shadow - even the blacks seem awash in browns and even more subtle blue- gray. Each designed area is in an imperfect shape; almost like a boro-inspired melange of different fabrics. The composition repeats every 25" but no repeat will exactly match. Uniquely light in weight - most ikats with such intricate designs are a bit heavier and thicker. This one is quite light and thin, a little sheer, and isn't at all shiny or crisp. It's supple and soft. Not like delicate tissue; there is strength in the weave. The texture and the design is exceptional; there seem to be layers beneath and above. It's the same on both sides and being an Oshima Tsumugi Silk, we assume mud and indigo dyed, and handwoven. 14" wide and sold by the full yard; we'll cut yours in one piece from the never used vintage bolt. 100% Silk, Oshima Tsumugi, from Japan.
