Slubby and soft, this silk is woven of just black and white, so the background reads as gray. Lots of natural life - currents in water, leaves and flowers, a few structures, all done in the weave. Most of the slubs are black silk nubs from thicker silk strands in the weave, in subtle rows running lengthwise through the bolt. They add a quite pretty texture. Thin, lightweight, tightly woven silk is not supple or drapey; it has a bit of body and crispness, and is quite soft to the touch, it may be raw silk. This is a true ikat so both sides look the same. The white in the weave is close to true white. The selvedges seem to be slightly darker white, more towards ivory. In some areas the selvedges have age spots and the worst spot is shown in the last photo. So, the selvedges aren't pretty but they are still functional - no tears or structural issues. Otherwise this silk is extremely pretty, in excellent condition. 14" wide, sold by the full yard, and we'll cut yours in one piece from the unused vintage bolt. Japan.
