Dark Red Vintage Japanese Obi Silk, Woven Flowers, Stripes, Symbols By the 4.7 Yard Bolt #2093
The base fabric is dark red 100% silk similar in weight to light canvas, with no shine. Quite heavy and substantial for silk, it was intended to be made into an obi; obi fabrics traditionally have a lot of heft and body. The flowers, crosses, diamonds and stripes design was embroidered on to the solid red silk; see the photos of the back. The design is dimensional, also with a matte finish, in palest peachy-white, gold, dark teal, and black. The red is a deep blue-red towards cranberry, not orange at all. Beautiful contrast and a bit of a folk art and Southwest look, though it's from Japan. This bolt of silk is probably several decades old and weighs almost a pound. The silk has a cottony look and feel.
This bolt is 11.75" wide and 172" long, so 4.77 total yards. The design is on the part of the fabric that would show when the obi is worn. The first 39" is solid dark red silk with no design. The next 75" has the design, with 7 rows of three flowers. The final 58" is solid dark red silk with no design. It is vintage silk from Japan in quite good condition, stored carefully and never used. This bolt is $75.00.
