Natural ecru colored cotton, slubby, unbleached, undyed, heavy yet soft. This cotton is absolutely luscious. Each process was done by hand using traditional tools such as cotton gin and wooden spinning wheel, in the 1950's-60's, in Japan. It is made from raw, unprocessed, very rustic cotton directly from the fields, so it's slubby and speckled with bits of leaves, has areas of slightly darker fibers, and many 'imperfections' including variance in thread width. Our friends in Japan say this is a collectible, rare fabric, a work of vintage fiber art no longer being made. At the time it was used for Noren curtains and a traditional Japanese garment called Samui.  It looks and feels like some silk slipped into the workroom but our source says it's all cotton. It's thick, rustic but soft, similar to silk matka. On a sunny window, a slight bit of light shines through but it's definitely opaque and heavy. We'll probably never see this heavenly homespun again, especially in perfect condition, carefully stored for decades, on bolts.

CARE: Customer feedback: Machine wash and dry, in what ever temperature you will use for the finished item. If it's a long piece it may want to tangle and wrinkle too much in the dryer, so take it out and smooth it then dry some more. If washed and dried hot, expect the 17.5" width to shrink to about 16.5-17".  Shrinkage about 5-10% in the length. It washed beautifully, stays soft; iron on cotton setting if desired.

17.5" wide.  Sold by the HALF yard for $22.00/per HALF yard.  (Order "4" and get 2 yards, etc.)
