Red Orchid on Black, Vintage Oshima Tsumugi Ikat Kimono Silk By the Yard, #504
True dark black plus two shades of trut red woven with black in the ikat. Large orchids are spaced a few inches apart through the bolt, and subtle slubs add to the beauty. The red is not towards orange; to us it's true dark red. Kimono from silks like these are beloved in Japan for their soft crispness, smooth silky hand, luxury quality and exceptional comfort when worn. Oshima silk pongee has been a Japanese treasure for hundreds of years. They are generally dyed with mud, indigo and other plants from the island of Oshima where they are also woven, and we think that is the case with this one. A true ikat, both sides look the same. Tsumugi is designated as an Intangible Cultural Property in Japan. This 100% silk is thin and crisp, with a smooth, soft hand. It's lightweight, with body, a bit of soft shine and subtle rustle - all of the fine Oshima Tsumugi qualities. Sold by the full yard and yours will be in one piece the length you order, cut from the never-used, excellent condition, vintage, bolt. 100% Silk. 14" wide. Japan.
