Green Hexagon/Tortoise Shell Kimono Silk by the Yard
An intricate ikat, with a background of dark green/black cross weave. Slubby and textured, raw silk Tsumugi, this design is very detailed with symbols. The colors are simple but their contrast is wonderful; deep green, two levels of gold, white and soft orange; a tangerine tone. The hexagon shape in Japan signifies the tortoise shell, called Kikko, and stands for good luck. Each hexagon is 3-1/2" x 4-12" and they all connect. This tsumugi is unusual in how intricate and varied the symbols are inside the kikko hexagons. It's so perfect it's almost architectural. Very much like dupioni, woven from raw silk of varying thicknesses, causing the wonderful slubby texture. It's not shiny, not particularly smooth, has a bit of body and crispness. Being a true ikat it's the same on both sides. This is vintage kimono silk in beautiful, pristine condition. It would be beautiful on a wall or table.
