Black/Red Tsumugi Ikat, Vintage Kimono Silk from Japan By the Yard #157
The intricate red-orange and black (mostly black) ikat creates a bit of a tweed look. The way it's woven, or maybe the thickness of the threads on the loom or both, changes now and then just enough to make this silk even more interesting and hypnotically beautiful. Tiny bits of bright orange-red pop through the black, and from a distance the two colors blend to make it look blackish red, or coppery/burgundy/brownish. Mid-light weight, thin, with body and a few slubs, it's smooth, supple and cottony-soft, with no shine, no drape, no sleekness; it feels like what we'd call raw silk, and probably is. One yard weighs only 2 ounces but it looks heavier. Much more beautiful and interesting than the photos; the camera struggles with the intricate, dark, two-color hand-weave. 14" wide. Sold per full yard and we'll cut yours in a continuous piece from the excellent condition bolt. 100% Silk. Japan.
